A DOZEN tram passengers were left fuming last night when pranksters locked them in the Metrolink station.

The irate passengers got off the tram at Bury Interchange at midnight and made their way up the escalator. But when they reached the top, they found the gates had been chained together and locked with a padlock.

They called the fire brigade from a phone on the platform, who arrived with bolt croppers to cut them free.

Leading fireman Gary Costin said: "We think someone had done it for a prank. The passengers were pretty annoyed."
