FOOTBALLERS mourning the tragic death of a team mate have pulled out of the Sunday League they played in each week.

They have decided to play no further matches this season out of respect for their friend, Mark Ashworth, who died after an incident in Bolton town centre over the Easter holiday weekend.

The players in the Toby Inn side from Edgworth are also hoping to organise a charity football match with celebrity guests in the summer to raise funds for the Royal Bolton Hospital.

Mark, 21, a panel beater, died from injuries he sustained in Bridge Street on Good Friday morning. A 19-year-old Bolton man has since been charged with manslaughter.

Mark, from Astley Bridge, played centre half for the Toby Inn team.

Manager Brian Stott said: "He was an integral part of the side.

"A few of his very, very close friends also play for us and did not feel they wanted to continue playing, which is understandable.

"Although Mark lived in Astley Bridge he knew many of the lads around Edgworth and was quite well known.

"He had played for us for a little over 12 months.

"What has happened is a shock to us all. When he first started playing for us he had no confidence in his ability whatsoever, but he settled down.

"He fitted in really well and proved a very good player.

"We will be registering the team for next season.

"Before then, however, we would like to hold a charity match in Mark's name in aid of the local hospital.

"Hopefully we will be able to attract one or two special guests to play in our side against a league representative team."
