A BURGLAR found the decomposed body of a middle aged man after breaking into an Eccles flat.
Police were contacted when a woman made a 999 call saying that a friend had discovered a body when he climbed into the home.
Officers were sent to the flat in Florence Street, Patricroft, shortly before 2.30pm yesterday and discovered signs of a break-in.
They forced their way into the home and found a man's body in the bedroom.
The man has not been officially identified but is believed to be Edwin Smith, who lived in the flat. He had been dead for some time.
A Home Office pathologist was called to the scene and forensic officers searched the area for clues. A post mortem examination was due to be carried out today.
Police are urging the woman caller or anyone else who may have information about the break-in to contact them on 0161-856-5352.
