BOLTON'S Mayor Cllr Peter Birch has vowed to campaign for Bolton's most famous footballing son to be knighted. Nat Lofthouse is already the proud recipient of the OBE, but Cllr Birch - a lifelong Bolton Wanderers' fan - believes that he should be a Sir.

The BEN could not agree more. And we have said so before in these columns.

But, while similarly illustrious contemporaries have been given this honour, for some unknown reason modest Nat has never been knighted.

We are all aware that knighthoods have to be "earned," but surely Nat's remarkable footballing achievements are sufficient.

Perhaps more important even than this is the fact that Nat Lofthouse has constantly shown how much he cares about this community.

He's been a rock to this town in more ways than one. If you cut him in half, he'd have BOLTON written all the way through.

We urge every Boltonian to support the Mayor's sensible plea to make it Sir Nat as soon as possible. Only that would be reet.
