A BURY company is one of a dozen in the North-west to win the Queen's Award for Export Achievement. W.H. Tracey Textile Recyclers, which has been trading since 1935, exports baled and sorted second-hand clothing and footwear to Kenya, the Baltic States and Pakistan and it has a new market in Zambia. The family-run business, which is based in Paradise Mill, John Street and has 105 employees, doubled export earnings between 1995 and 1997.

There is also recognition for Joy Mining Machinery Ltd, which employs 1,500 people at its three main UK production centres in Wigan, Worcester and Bestwood in Nottinghamshire.

The company, which is Britain's biggest mining machinery manufacturer, has increased export sales - primarily to Russia, Poland, China and India - from £85 million in 1995 to a current value of £170 million a year.

GEC Alsthom Rushton Diesels Ltd, Newton-le-Willows, Merseyside (medium speed diesel engines).

Seafood Marketing International plc, Droylsden, Greater Manchester (frozen shrimps).

Statestrong Ltd, Lytham, Lancashire (aerosol toiletries).

Sutcliffe Speakman Carbons Ltd, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancs (speciality activated carbon).

UCB Films plc (Wigton, Cumbria (cellulose and polypropylene films).

Zeneca LifeScience Molecules, Blackley, Manchester (fine chemicals and biotechnology-based products).

In addition Pilkington plc at St Helens is one of four companies nationally to receive the Queen's Award for Environmental Achievement.

The accolade was earned through the development of technology to reduce emissions in glass melting furnaces.
