SIR: The letter from Mr McManus (April 15) suggesting that I should live in a country where millions of people are murdered, simply because of their Christian beliefs, was short.
Maybe he should explain in more detail. Is he suggesting that because some countries aren't quite so tolerant towards alien religions, that we should be the same? Or is he saying that in this country we are perfect? Is he forgetting the hundreds of Christians murdered by Christians in the struggle over Northern Ireland? Does he not realise that bigots will always find a reason to hate?
Christians have been crusading for 2,000 years. Bloody religious wars have raged throughout history. Isn't it about time 'religious' people of all creeds and denominations, realised, that "creed is such an accident of birth, God can't set an exclusive value on it," as A J Cronin once wrote.
I'm not ashamed to be English, just ashamed of some of my countrymen.
