THE New York Institute of Insurance has made the discovery that married people live longer than single ones. Those of us who have promised to love, honour and obey, for better or worse, may take comfort from this as we summon up endurance to cope with another 25 years or so or mortgage repayments, electricity bills, rates, and the cost of children's clothes.

Paterfamilias may argue that it just seems longer.

AT the Borough Court this morning, a young woman, named Jane Warburton, piecer, Back Pump-street, was brought up on a charge of trespassing on premises belonging to the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company on the 21st inst. Mr Hall appeared on behalf of the company, and stated that for some time past the female closets art the Trinity-street station had been infested by a lot of loose women who made use of them and the washing places attached to them, as if they were first-class lady passengers. Information was given to the station master, Mr Crompton, on the day mentioned, to the effect that the defendant was in the washing place, and on going there he found her dressing her hair as if she had been washing. He ordered her away, and she refused to go. She then commenced to swear. Mr Crompton removed her into Trinity-street, and as soon as he turned his back she again entered the closet, and she was ultimately given into custody.

Mr Crompton stated that he had frequently warned females against using the water closets in the manner the defendant had done, and that several small parcels had been missed from the washing place in which he found defendant. Inspector Greenhalgh gave evidence to the effect that the defendant was a woman of disrepute. A fine of 10s and costs was inflicted, in default 21 days' imprisonment.
