A BIG emergency operation was launched last night when it was feared killer asbestos dust could be spewed all over Bolton.

The drama began when a former warehouse - once used by an asbestos removal firm to store the deadly substance - caught fire just after 6pm.

Police used a tannoy from the force helicopter to warn people away from the disused building in Astley Street, Astley Bridge.

Scores of residents near the large warehouse were also told to stay indoors and keep windows closed.

Thirty-five firemen wearing chemical protection suits spent all night tackling the fierce blaze which destroyed the building.

But, fortunately, no asbestos had been left at the site and the area was given the all-clear.

A fire spokesman said: "This was a major operation. A lot of manpower was deployed because we first feared major problems. It is also a residential area so it was vital neighbours were alerted quickly."

Flames shot above the roof of the warehouse at the height of the blaze and residents could see thick, black smoke for miles around.

And eyewitness said: "The police chopper was swirling around shouting for people to get away and firemen were everywhere. The fire itself was huge."

Building inspectors and fire investigators were at the site today.

The cause of the blaze it is not yet known, but it is believed youths could have torched the warehouse.

A fireman said: "It is not the first time fires have been started here so that's what I would guess has happened here."

The building - now owned by Bolton Council - is expected to be demolished because damage is so bad.
