SIR: I would like to express my dismay at the New Year's offerings on ITV. Last week 's McCallum was too explicit for me anyway and I hope that the series improves. In the first place, the actor John Hannah is as cheerful as Hong Kong chicken and I am quoting now. Of course, he has not got a very inspiring job, but I would hope that his countenance improves as the series moves on.
Taggart was no better and I am sure that we could do with some brighter episodes. I don't know how Mary Whitehouse is these days, but I can imagine that she reached for the off switch last Tuesday.
We could do with some cheerful programmes to take our minds off the bad weather.
