A YOUNG man, named Thomas Noon, was taken into custody at Heywood on Sunday night, charged with having seriously wounded Margaret Humber, factory operative, of Hind-street, Heywood. Noon had wished to court the young woman, but had not met with the reception he desired. He took the opportunity on Sunday night, shortly after ten o'clock, of again urging his suit. Being again coolly received, he threatened Humber with ill-usage, and, drawing a knife, commenced a savage assault upon her, inflicting no fewer than six wounds. He was shortly afterwards apprehended. The knife, covered in blood, was close to the scene of the assault. The injured woman is under the care of Dr Torrup. One of the wounds on the side of the neck is very dangerous. The prisoner, who is a native of Liverpool, was brought up at the Bury Petty Sessions on Monday, and remanded for a week.
