PUPILS at a local primary have been told they are the pride of their school and families.

Government OFSTED inspectors praised the youngsters at Guardian Angels' RC Primary after spending four days at the school in Elton, Bury.

Reporting Inspector Monica Timmis said the children played well together in a caring community and added: "The children are a credit to their families and their teachers."

She praised the school for having clear values, teaching the children a sense of right and wrong and being sensitive to their needs.

The warm and friendly relationships amongst pupils and between pupils and staff was highlighted as a particular strength.

Educationally, the school also fared well with inspectors concluding that, in observed lessons, pupils' attainment at the end of each key stage in English, Maths and Science was at least the national average and at times above.

Results of national tests on 11-year-olds have been consistently well above the national average, with an impressive number of pupils attaining the higher level 5.

Head Dennis Harrison - described as providing strong, energetic and purposeful leadership - said he was "delighted" by the report and was particularly pleased the inspection team praised the atmosphere of the school.

Chairman of governors, Father Paul Cannon, said: "The staff, children and parents deserve this very good report."
