FIRE bosses are warning Bolton folk to be on their guard this Christmas.

Basic rules to avoid blazes at home include never leaving candles unattended, keeping wrapping paper away from fires and checking ashtrays, plugs and lights.

Smoke alarms - with working batteries - should also be fitted.

Last year in Greater Manchester 18 injuries and six deaths were caused by fire over Christmas.

And in Bolton firemen saved a 20-year-old man from death in Mossfield Road, Farnworth, when his chip pan caught fire while he slept after a party.

"A smoke alarm will alert you to the earliest possible sign of fire," said a fire service spokesman. "It is your only warning. Once a fire has taken hold, your chances of escape are slim."

Meanwhile, North West Water is also offering people advice about how to avoid festive floods.

Homeowners and businesses should shut off stop taps if buildings are left empty for several days.

That precaution will minimise damage from burst pipes should any sudden freezing weather be followed by a quick thaw.

Checks should also be arranged for empty buildings and heating left on low to prevent bursts or leaking pipes.

"Taking a few simple precautions can save an enormous amount of misery and prevent an enjoyable holiday being spoiled," said John Barnes, North West Water's water supply manager.
