THERE'LL be no white Christmas in Chorley this year. Not according to a pioneering long-range weather forecasting company which bases its predictions on solar activity.

The Alternative Weather Service's latest 30-days-ahead forecast, issued at the beginning of December, says the month will be generally drier and milder than normal.

It adds that some snow can be expected around the middle of the month and again on Christmas Day, especially on higher ground in the north and east. But it claims there will be some marked variations between regions - with eastern and central regions having generally below average rainfall for the month, while Ireland and western parts will be generally wetter.

At the same time the east and south will be generally colder with western regions remaining milder.

The company says frequent high pressure systems will tend to give southerly winds and gales at times in western parts, although the east will be quieter.
