LINDSAY Hoyle is to stand down as mayor and a borough councillor in March.
The MP has decided not to seek re-election for his Adlington seat - which he has held for 18 years - in May.
Mr Hoyle, whose wife Cath is mayoress, confirmed: "I hope people will understand why I am bowing out at this stage. I will have been a councillor for 18 years and deputy mayor and mayor over the last two years.
"Cath and I have had a wonderful term of office. I would like to thank people for their tremendous support and assure them I will continue to serve Chorley as MP to the best of my ability."
Council leader Jack Wilson said: "Lindsay is timing his resignation from the council to allow the vacancy to be filled in May rather than impose the inconvenience and expense of a by-election on Adlington."
