IAN McAllister, chief executive of Ford UK and president of the Society of Motor Manufacturers, is one of the leaders of a new "green taskforce".

It aims to encourage the use of cleaner fuel technology to minimise environmental damage by road vehicles.

Mr McAllister, a local man who went to Thornleigh College, Bolton, shares leadership of the new body with Transport Minister Gavin Strang.

The task force will promote research related to cleaner vehicle technology, encourage the purchase of greener vehicles and focus on European action during Britain's presidency of the EU.
