PARENTS and children from St James's Primary School, Farnworth, have paid their own tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales.

The death of the Princess in August so deeply affected everyone connected with the Hillside Avenue School that they decided to raise money in her memory.

Headteacher David Tuck said: "The parents approached me and asked if they could raise money through the school for Diana. They wanted to do something to mark Diana's life. It was a really lovely response from them and I agreed whole-heartedly."

Parents of the 300 schoolchildren, aged between three and 11, donated nearly £200. About £70 has been spent on a commemorative plaque and the rest is being sent to the Princess Diana Memorial Fund.

Mr Tuck said the plaque would be placed in the Rainbow Room, where children from the nursery play.

"It seems appropriate to hang up the plaque celebrating the Princess's life in a room used by children. And of course, before marrying, she was a nursery teacher."

The plaque was handed to the school by parents at a special Harvest Assembly.
