A FITNESS era came to an end when Malcolm and Carol Doran handed over the keys of Farnworth Health Club to new owner Barbara Griffiths.

Barbara has been the Gladstone Road club's manager for the past 15 years.

The Dorans started Farnworth Health Club 22 years ago, turning the premises into a local haven for fans keen to take part in the burgeoning fitness boom.

There were separate men's and ladies' days then, with Malcom looking after the men's weight-training and Carol taking the females in stretching and toning exercises.

Since then, of course, fitness has become far more comprehensive (although Malcolm's weight training started basic routines that many local males still practice today.)

On the women's side, Carol has always been quick to try out the latest fitness ideas - the pool allowed them to be among the first to try out aquarobics and work with weights. And she has always proved practical and supportive for slimmers, and a stalwart in fund-raising for local charities.

The couple have now retired "to try out other things." As a fit and active couple, they both intend to play golf and cycle, especially during lengthy stays in Spain.

"We've made so many friends of members over the years, and had some lovely times," recalls Carol.

"In fact, we're now honorary members at the club and we have to go back to see people - it's the kind of fix we need!"
