EDUCATION chiefs have hit back at what they describe as a "harsh" report by Ofsted inspectors on a Little Hulton School.

Wharton County Primary was hit by two major fires within just four weeks last year.

One was caused by an electrical fault, the other an arson attack and together they devastated a teaching block destroying vital documents and records.

But the Ofsted report, just published, makes scant reference to the incidents. And the school's governors describe the omission as "a little unfair", especially as staff went out of their way to ensure that the children's education was not affected.

Ofsted inspectors conclude that the school "could do better" and suggest areas where improvement is needed.

Peter Green, chairman of governors, said: "We believe Ofsted could have been a little more sympathetic considering the circumstances. We are criticised for not having certain records but no mention is made of the fact that they were burned and were impossible to replace within such a timescale."

He went on: "Raising our standards has always been our number one priority and now the dreadful events of the last 12 months are behind us we can get on with that job. It is pleasing to note that results this summer, too late to be included in the Ofsted report, show a marked improvement and gives us confidence for the future."
