GUDNI Bergsson is facing the crossroads in his record-breaking international career.
The Bolton Wanderers defender has been surprisingly dropped from the Icelandic squad for their final World Cup qualifying group game against Lichenstein on Saturday.
His country's most capped player with 77 appearances under his belt, Bergsson's omission comes in the wake of a row with national boss Gudjon Thordarson which culminated in the player refusing to make himself available for the last match in Romania.
That decision was taken after Thordarson refused to allow Bergsson to travel home independently in order to be rested and ready for Wanderers' Premiership match at Arsenal.
Thordarson has not given a reason for leaving his skipper out but Bergsson's club boss Colin Todd declared today: "It's hardly surprising he's not included after what happened last time."
Todd also dismissed reports that Bergsson's fellow countryman Arnar Gunnlaugsson could be on his way to First Division Wolves whose manager Mark McGhee is understood to have been impressed by the 24-year-old forward in a recent reserve match between the two clubs.
