A NATIONWIDE clampdown on speeding drivers - spearheaded by a tragic Bolton hit and run victim - has netted 9,000 Greater Manchester drivers in two weeks.

That is the number of drivers throughout the county who have been prosecuted in the campaign's first 14 days by GM police officers.

A further 2,000 have been stopped and advised regarding their speed.

Insp Brian Ritson, the Force's Road Safety Officer, called the figures "disgusting".

He said: "The fact that so many motorists have so little regard for speed and the dangers it presents to other road users is disturbing."

Bolton's Tracy Kennedy, aged 6, was killed as she crossed the road outside her Central Avenue, Farnworth home, three years ago. She is one of the several tragic youngsters featured in the £3 million 'Kill Your Speed' TV and radio campaign, designed to shock motorists into taking notice.
