A REPEAT of last year's Christmas crackers will receive a cool reception from Wigan coach Eric Hughes.

The traditional derby fixtures against St Helens on Boxing Day and New Year's Day were resurrected as a welcome financial mid-season bonus by the two clubs, but the Warriors coach is hoping his players will be given a well earned rest.

"A decision has yet to be made but if we have to play on financial grounds then so be it. But looking at it purely as a coach I feel the players need a break," said Hughes.

"The top players have had a long season followed by a Test series and before that had a season and a tour. There is too much being asked of our top players. They are not machines."

Hughes has nine players in the GB training squad but he has given the remainder a month off.

"They will have a much needed rest and then begin pre-season training at the beginning of November. Ideally we would like to give the players three months preparation, working on strength, speed and ball skills."

Hughes' first job is to check on his players to see if any need surgery. Gary Connolly (knee), Tony Smith (knee) and Nigel Wright (shoulder) will all be seeing a specialist, but Henry Paul is expected to make a full recovery from a broken arm.

The Warriors coach will also be meeting the directors to see if there is any money available to strengthen the squad. Hughes has indicated that the three-quarters is the area he would most like to strengthen.
