YOUNG Bolton men looking for a challenge are being sought to take part in the toughest team sport in the world.

Due to age restrictions, the Bolton Youth Field Gun Crew lost many of its senior members last month, so new recruits are being looked for to replace them.

Anyone who has watched the Royal Tournament will recognise the impressive field gun competition, competed for annually by navy crews from Portsmouth, Devonport and the Fleet Air Arm.

In less than the time it takes to boil an egg, the 18 member crews manhandle a half ton gun over an obstacle course and back again, dismantling, reassembling and firing in the process.

It is a demanding sport which requires teamwork, self-discipline, courage and self confidence.

The Bolton Youth team was set up seven years ago by Sgt Ian Hignett, from Bolton Police, to offer 14 to 21 year old local youths a new interest.

And throughout the summer the team competes at shows around the country alongside its main rivals, a team from Manchester and raises thousands of pounds for charity.

A highlight of the year is a week long visit to RNAS Culdrose, where the youths have the opportunity to train alongside their affiliated crew from the Fleet Air Arm.

The Bolton lads meet each Sunday to train at the Smith and Cooks Timber Mill in Church Street, Ainsworth, although they are currently hunting for a new home.

And to show what they are capable of they held an open day at the mill on Saturday.

Anyone interested in joining the team, no matter what their speed, strength, size or experience, can contact C Williamson on Bolton 52518 during the day or Bolton 432715 in evenings.

"If you don't think you have it in you, don't be put off. Many of our best crew members thought they didn't have it in them and we found it," said a crew spokesman.
