THE pro-am pairing of Andrew Baguley and Geoff Anderson from Leigh Golf Club set the pace in yesterday's opening round of the Lombard Top Club Trophy over the San Lorenzo course in Portugal's Algarve.
The tournament, the biggest in Europe, with an original entry of over 100,000, was set alight by a seven under par 65 from the Leigh pair.
Baguley, a former PGA Cup player, was in scintillating form, hitting five birdies.
The pro at Leigh for eight years, Baguley said: "We played very steadily. The greens were a bit quicker than yesterday practice round but we both holed some good putts."
Anderson, a 50-year-old from Golborne, had one puzzling incident at the final hole. His tee shot disappeared up a tree - and never came down!
