BLACKBURN MP Jack Straw scores high on recognition in a new opinion poll but low on competence.

Some 74pc have heard his name but only 15pc know he was Home Secretary.

And a measly 10pc think he is doing his job well. Only Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Chris Smith scores worse on this score, with just 5pc saying he is up scratch.

Runaway leader in the Gallup poll is Prime Minister Tony Blair who is recognised by 98pc, while 92pc know his jobs and 77pc think he is doing it well.

Deputy John Prescott comes second ( 91, 47 and 32), with Foriegn Secretary Robin Cook (85, 42 and 29) third, Education and Employment Secretary David Blunkett (77, 43 and 30) fourth and Chancellor Gordon Brown (77, 38, and 26) fifth.
