A TEENAGER died doing a favour for a neighbour last night. Paul Tyney, aged 18, was killed crossing the M66 near his Bury home as he went to a petrol station to buy cigarettes. Paul only arrived back in Bury to live with his father Mr Stewart Tyney in Renshaw Drive earlier this month after two years in Ireland and London.

Mr Tyney now has the heart-rending task of trying to trace Paul's mother, believed to be living in London, to break the news.

Paul had spent yesterday evening at friend Patrick Sweeney's home, and at 11 pm volunteered to go to the petrol station.

When a neighbour wanted cigarettes Paul offered to go to service station at Wash Lane.

"He'd had a couple of drinks with me, but he wasn't staggering or anything," said Mr Sweeney.

"That was the last we saw of him."

None of his friends knew Paul was planning to take a short cut across the motorway near junction 2.

He was struck by a Vauxhall Corsa driven by a 26-year-old man from Cheetham Hillon on the south bound carriageway.

Paul was dead on arrival at Bury General Hospital. The driver was not hurt but his male passenger suffered cuts and bruises.

Mr Tyney was today devastated by Paul's death.

He described his son, who loved swimming and snooker, as "a happy go lucky, lively lad".

Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them at Birch Motorway Post on 0161 856 8363.
