BOLTON Planning Committee is protesting about the plan to rename the town's historic Swan Hotel the Duck Inn Hotel. In the strongest-possible local government language, it records its 'sense of outrage' at the suggestion, and earnestly requests the owners to change their minds.

IN these days of reduced entertainment facilities and increasing prices, the wireless is taken an even more prominent place in the entertainment sphere. Since pre-war days the number of wireless licences issued has steadily increased, and in the Bolton postal district there has been a two thousand yearly increase in the issue, bringing the 1947 total to almost 64,000 licences. Before June 1st, 1946, licences were 10s yearly, and in June the rate went up to £1.

SIR, - Allow me space to offer a few remarks upon the Town Letter Carriers, a much-abused class of men. They are supposed to be out in all weathers, fair or stormy; and if the least mistake is made by any of them the unfortunate individual is reported as soon as possible to the head authorities in London; or, if the postmaster where he is stationed is what is termed a decent sort of chap, he may get off with a reprimand, and a threat if such misconduct is repeated he will be suspended until the decision arrives from London as to what is to be done with him. Thus they are kept in continual terror through seeing repeatedly the harsh treatment to which so many of their class are subjected to.

They are obliged to be in the office by six o'clock in the morning and are kept at it until eight o'clock at night, what with collections and deliveries.

Let them strike for more wage, say for 18s a week, with a certain allowance for boots; also for a yearly rise of 1s, up to 24s a week. They would get it, as no man with a grain of sense would take the work over their heads at the wage.
