SIR: I refer to the letter from Mrs H E Flitcroft (Your Views: September 15) regarding the Reebok Stadium. In it, she stated that "some jobs may be created in the service industries in the new development, but that these will probably be in catering and leisure services."

She then describes these jobs as 'pointless'. What's wrong with these jobs? She is concerned that jobs should be provided in Horwich to ensure that people will want to live in the town. Surely service sector jobs are potentially clean and relatively pollution free when compared with the long-lost traditional industries of the past.

I accept that anyone is entitled to dislike the appearance of the Reebok Stadium, since beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Mrs Flitcroft quite obviously dislikes it intensely. My personal view, however, is that the stadium is the most aesthetically pleasing structure to be erected in the North-west over the last 30 years.

The siting of the new 'Trotterbowl' at Horwich will raise the national profile of the town immeasurably and surely the townsfolk should be appreciative of this, once the short-term problems are overcome.

Atherton.
