SIR: I would not have received further education had I had to pay for tuition. Such a payment attacks particularly the working class.

I notice concern expressed in your column about this 'tax on learning' by one of our MPs. What we want is not their sympathy, but will they vote against it in Parliament?

I accepted the increase in Parliamentary salaries because it was determined by an independent commission. Most of our successors criticised us at the time, but themselves accepted the increase.

However, at the time I made it clear that what was good enough for MPs should equally apply to nurses and teachers.

I hope the new intake will honour the position that what is good for them should be available for everyone else.

D Young.
