SERVICES to help patients discharged from hospital have been given a £72,000 boost by the Government.

The cash is part of a massive £300,000 grant awarded to Wigan and Bolton health authority from the Community Care Challenge Funding.

It means that Bolton social services can provide an extra social worker and home care manager at the Royal Bolton Hospital.

They would carry out community care assessments and ensure that people who are being discharged from hospital have sufficent care when they return home.

The money will also pay for 70 more home care hours to support the existing 24-hour service.

The news will be reported to members of Bolton Council's social services committee on Tuesday.

Chairman Cllr Ken Peters said: "The money will particularly help elderly people, people with disabilities and those who live alone."

Bolton Council's housing department has also received £28,000 from the grant to increase Careline services and £100,00 has gone to the community care trust.
