SIR: Referring to the letter last Thursday complimenting Bolton BMC on its Union Road amenity, I feel some recognition too, should be given to the very pleasant and helpful man who operates the said amenity. While putting pen to paper, I would like to ask why it is always felt that if some pleasure spot exists, it is our duty to make it difficult for anyone to use. I refer to the euphemistically named Blue Lagoon.

When I first came to Bolton, driving past on the road, there was a hard packed standing for cars, enabling parents and families to have picnics close by. Convenient when one considers all the things needed to cater for the small child in this situation. Later some enlightened thinking by the council put a tarmacadam surface on the standing, making it a more formal parking area, making it a popular venue on warm sunny days. Who was the wunderkind, therefore, who fixed posts and chains and double yellow lines in all directions obliging families to park on the opposite side of the road in a rather vulnerable fashion or obliging mothers with their children to trudge considerable distances to savour the modest delights of this recreational area.
