HOUSING chiefs are glowing with praise for a new £1/4m contract for vital safety work in thousands of Chorley council homes.

From this week, the town hall's own operational services department became responsible for all servicing and repairs of central heating systems in the borough's 3,500 houses.

Previously the work was carried out by private contractors. But after winning the £130,000, two-year contract, the council says it will bring in extra cash and ensure the work is done to the highest standard.

Chorley's director of operations, Frank Whitehead, said: "It's extremely good news. "This type of work is always extremely competitive. To win is extra special.

Coun Neil Hilton, chairman of the operational services committee, said: "Giving value for money is what we are all about and we have been able to do that to the benefit of all, from council tax payers through to our own staff. We are pleased that we have staff qualified to the highest possible standards who are competent and capable of carrying out work which, if not done properly, can have serious consequences."

Housing committee chairman, Coun Barry Hodson, also underlined the council's commitment and expertise in this type of work and added: "It is also satisfying that we can actually safeguard local jobs and at the same time raise vital income for the council."
