From the Evening News, June 4, 1947

WE used to hear about black-coated workers, and not very long ago that particular class - profession, clerical, or shop assistant - would never have dreamt of relaxing the style of dress that was fitting for the job, whenever the mercury in the thermometer rambled. A barrister was only yesterday rebuked by a judge for appearing in court fully wigged and robed, but without waistcoat!

For the most part it's very different now. Oxford Bags are almost formal wear, and one walked into an office this morning to find everyone working coatless and waistcoatless, in soft collars and in many sorts of trews.

YESTERDAY, about noon, considerable excitement was created in the neighbourhood of the new Town Hall, by the arrival of several of the figures which are to be used for the purpose of decorating the tympanum, the portico, and the pedestals on each side of the pediment of the building. It will be remembered that in December, 1869, the designs of the various competitors for the work were on view at the Committee-room in Acres Field. The design of William Calder Marshall. Esq., sculptor of the Crompton Monument, was chosen in preference to any of the other five sent in. At the time of the exhibition of Mr Marshall's design, it was stated that it was intended to represent Bolton supported by Manufacture and Industry.' The figures which arrived yesterday have been executed in Caen stone, and present a most beautiful appearance.
