ONE of the greatest jazz pianists is set to make a solo concert appearance as part of the 12th Wigan International Jazz Festival.

Best selling recording artist Jessica Williams will take to the stage at the Mill at the Pier on Sunday, July 13.

Her critically acclaimed talent earned her a dual listing in the prestigious Jazz Journal International Critics Poll, Top Ten Best Selling Albums of the Year.

In addition to Jessica, the 19-piece Frank Foster Orchestra, Woody Herman's 'Thundering Herd', and the Ray Brown Trio will be taking to the stage.

This year's programme has been extended by festival organisers, Wigan MBC and Wigan Borough Partnership, to include a range of additional jazz events.

The 'fringe festival' events include special lunchtime performances, many of them free, in a variety of pubs, including The Beer Engine, Yates Wine Lodge, Steppes and The Orwell.

Also on offer are street performances from Wigan Youth Big Band, a late night jam session at The Oak Hotel, and a series of jazz workshops which are being held at The Parlour at the Pier.

The festival, sponsored by CTP Limited and Miller Developments, runs from July 12 to 19. Further details from Wigan Tourist Information Centre on 01942 825677.
