WALKING sticks, wheelchairs and supportive arms were brought into action by a have-a-go band of walkers who stepped out in style to raise cash for charity.

More than 80 former hip and knee replacement patients shrugged off their difficulties when they walked the one mile around the Royal Bolton Hospital for The Wishbone Trust.

The Trust is a national charity which funds research into replacement surgery.

The walkers, many of whose lives have been changed by the operation, were accompanied by family and friends.

The Bolton "Hip and Knee" Walk was mirrored in towns and cities across the country and locally is expected to raise more than £2,000.

After walking around the hospital grounds, walkers tucked into light refreshments which were served in the orthopaedic outpatient department.

The oldest person to complete Sunday's walk was 86. There were several others in their 80s and virtually all taking part were supported by family and friends who were also sponsored.

Consultant Surgeon Steve Hodgson, the organiser of the event, said: "We're delighted by the response. We certainly couldn't have asked for better weather."
