Euro MP Gary Titley is backing moves to give air travellers better insurance protection.
The Greater Manchester West Euro MP attacked the "archaic small print" on airline tickets which refers to the Warsaw Convention.
This is an international agreement dating back to the 1920s and limits the liability of airlines in the event of an accident.
While Mr Titley acknowledges that air travel is a safe form of transport he says there are hundreds of relatively minor accidents every year.
"The fear is that these outdated Warsaw Convention rules could provide a loophole for unscrupulous airlines to shirk their responsibilities and avoid paying full compensation," he said.
"An agreement, made in the 1920s, when air travel was a rarity, has no place in the 1990s when tens of millions fly every year for business and pleasure."
