SIR: I refer to the letter "Give Tom credit for what he did", (Your Views, May 31) and I would like to inform the writer that my opinion is in no way 'blatantly blinkered', regarding the former MP Tom Sackville, and I strongly object to the tone of his letter.

Each and every one of us are fully entitled to our opinion - or should be if we profess to be members of a democratic society and the writer would do well to heed his own words "fair mindedness does not come easy to some people". The efforts of Tom Sackville on the drug problem seem to have yielded very little result - one has only to look around our small community of Westhoughton to know that, and I have yet to meet anyone who can honestly prove to me any benefits received during the 'Sackville Years' - but then perhaps maybe I don't mix in the 'right society'.

It would be appreciated Sir, if my correct name were appended to this letter, although I am sure Trevor T Mellows is already aware of this.
