SIR: It was interesting to read a report of 1,000 rail workers facing the chop; but being thrown a lifeline by Margaret Beckett (Trade Supremo). She has ordered an enquiry by the Monopolies Commission on the takeover of Scotrail and Central Trains by National Express.

Public services are being turned into private monopolies, but the biggest scandal of all is the privatisation subsidy reported to be expected as £1.6 billion of taxpayers money to help run Scotrail and £1 billion to take over Central Trains.

No wonder the arrogant Tories got the chop and good riddance.
