TENANT Jeanette Kitchen was amazed to see a photograph of her home promoting an £8 million council security scheme on a Bolton estate.

For the picture of her smart semi appeared in the BEN just four months after burglars ransacked her newly improved home.

And the mum-of-two claims shoddy workmanship during the multi-million pound improvement scheme made it easier for the raiders to get in.

The picture of Jeanette's home on Linacre Avenue was among a number of 'before' and 'after' photographs taken by housing staff on the Orlit and Mancroft Estates.

They were among a selection given to the BEN to illustrate council claims that people have been queuing up to live in once difficult to let properties.

But Jeanette painted a different picture and claimed contractors had broken her security light and left a large gap in the fence which made it easier for the raiders to burgle her property.

She also criticised the newly installed double glazed windows which were levered open by yobs who stole hundreds of pounds worth of electrical equipment.

Jeanette said: "When they took the photographs last summer they told me it was because the garden and the hanging baskets looked so beautiful.

"I could not believe it when I saw them in the paper next to a story about increased security.

"Some of the things the council have done are good but as far as I am concerned everything was done on the cheap. My house is not safe - I was only burgled four months ago."

A council spokesman said a number of smaller jobs are still outstanding from the the massive improvement scheme but these would be completed soon.

He added: "We have carried out a lot of improvement work on the interior and exterior of this particular property and will address the tenant's concerns as soon as possible."
