A WORRIED mum fears a temporary road crossing is an accident waiting to happen. And she has appealed for contractors to move the crossing further away from one of Bolton's busiest roundabouts. Maintenance work has closed part of the subway running under the Kearsley roundabout. And pedestrians, including children from Kearsley West CP school now have to cross the busy Bolton Road.

And Alison Prescott fears a serious accident could happen if the crossing is not moved further down Bolton Road away from the roundabout.

Mrs Prescott said: "On the first day it was there I saw an old lady have a really narrow escape and I really fear for mums and children crossing there."

She added: "It must be one of the busiest roundabouts in Bolton and cars come at some speed off it after they leave St Peter's Way.

"I know the work has to be done on the subways but they really should move that crossing to a safer place."

It is currently close to the junction of Bolton Road and Clough Street. Mrs Prescott, whose eight-year-old son Anthony is a pupil at Kearsley West school, said: "Surely it would be safer down towards the traffic lights at Stoneclough Road." Parents of pupils at Kearsley West have been told the subway work is expected to take 10 weeks and advised them to cross their children at the temporary crossing."

A Bolton Council spokesman said: "The temporary refuge has been positioned where it is after a detailed safety audit.

"If people have concerns about it and contact us we will look at this again. We would also point out that there is a junction with traffic lights close by if people feel happier to use that.

"We would also urge drivers to take extra caution during the next 10 weeks."
