TWO league victories in as many days have taken Leigh RMI to the fringe of the promotion battle.

Their 2-0 victory over Ashton United at rain-swept Hilton Park last night moved the Railwaymen in fourth spot with games in hand on their rivals.

There was a debut for former Crewe defender Dave Collier who fitted in well in place of Mark Schofield, who suffered a reaction after a long lay-off, in Saturday's win at Bradford Park Avenue.

"The build up to the first goal was worth the admission fee alone," said manager Steve Waywell. "And with Keith Evans getting the second it means that both him and Chris Shaw are now in double figures.

"It was our ninth clean sheet of the season and Danny Collier was impressive in what was very young defensive line-up," added Waywell.

Shaw was the architect of the first goal, collecting Gary Jones' pass and brilliantly turning inside Steve Hollis before laying a cross into the path of Dave Ridings who slid the ball home after a 40-yard run.

The points were sealed 10 minutes from time when Paul Wheeler's break into the box caused a mix-up in the Ashton defence and Evans was on hand to drive the ball into the roof of the net.
