A MOTHER and son who became husband and wife were sentenced in San Diego, California, for bigamy. The mother was sentenced for six months' imprisonment, the son for nine months. The couple have a two-years-old daughter.

The son had been given up for adoption immediately after his birth in 1948, and his mother did not see him again until he was 19. He had taken the name of his adoptive parents. His defence said in court that his only crime was "falling in love with a total stranger who happened to be his natural mother." Both were placed on probation for three years.

SIR,- In a list of persons favourable to the movement for closing public houses on Sundays, published a short time ago, I perceived that of the Rev. Canon Powell, standing opposite to a donation of 5s. By signing that memorial, the rev. gentleman shows his disapproval of Sunday traffic in strong drink; but according to a report which appeared in your paper he signed a petition for the licensing of two public houses, which petition set forth that there existed a necessity for the issuing of such licences. Now, I ask the rev. gentleman where his consistency is; and, also to prove the necessity for two more public houses in a neighbourhood which is already burdened with at least half-a-dozen.

Again, speaking at a tea meeting, Canon Powell said it was desirable that the working classes should have opportunities for pleasure. Let me ask, however, if he considers that public houses are fit places for recreation for the working classes.

Yours, W. Brown, Sec. Sons of Temperance.
