A POLICE crackdown to put the brake on Greater Manchester's road tax dodgers was mounted today. Police chiefs estimate that up to 59,000 motorists in the region are driving untaxed cars and motorbikes on the county's roads. And unpaid car tax is estimated to cost the country a staggering £7.7million in lost revenue.

Motorists driving untaxed vehicles were today warned that traffic police officers will be carrying out roadside checks in Bolton, and throughout the rest of Greater Manchester, over the next few weeks.

The four-week police campaign, held in conjunction with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, was launched at lunchtime today.

Motorists are warned that rogue tax fiddlers could face fines of up to £1,000.
