BOLTON City Challenge has launched an ambitious survey to see how much money is being invested in Halliwell by local businesses.

They have appointed ERM Economics who specialise in such studies to carry out the survey and have issued a questionnaire for Halliwell companies to complete.

"The survey will provide vital statistics on how successful City Challenge has been in bringing about the economic regeneration of Halliwell," said Bolton City Challenge Chairman Bob Howarth.

"It will also show what types of businesses are developing in the area and how successful those companies are becoming."

The survey asks local businessman what they are planning to spend on everything from equipment such as computers or refurbishing their premises to staff development and training.

All responses are treated with complete confidentiality and all returned forms are being entered into a draw with a prize of £75 for the winner.

"I urge any business that has not yet returned their form to do so as the results of this survey will be used by City Challenge to influence future Government policy on the best ways to help restore economic prosperity in areas like Halliwell," said Cllr Howarth.

Companies located in the City Challenge area who would like further information or have not yet received a survey form should contact Alison Poole on Tel: 0171 465 7388. Climb every mountain? Women get creative with new group MORE than 60 Bolton women and girls have joined forces to launch the Creative Women's Project which will set up activities ranging from crafts and cookery to educational sessions.

Supported by Bolton City Challenge, North West Arts Board and Bolton MetroM-bs Arts Unit as part of the Cultural Activities Development Project, the initiative targets activities particularly for Asian women in the City Challenge area but is open to all other interested women.

A special launch party held recently at Wolfenden Community Centre was extremely successful and was the first of what is hoped to be many events arranged by the project.

"The first meeting was very successful and attracted a lot of interest from women of all cultural backgrounds," said Bolton City Challenge Director Sharifa Patel.

"We are now assessing the input of all the women who attended to see what the most popular courses are likely to be and we think the first project will be in henna painting."

Other proposed activities include courses in video production and ceramics, day trips and educational excursions.

The long term aim is to set up an informal support network where local women will be able to advise and help each other. It is hoped it will also become self funding following the end of City Challenge's tenure and that it will also develop to include business enterprises.

"There is a tremendous amount of creativity and energy in the women of Halliwell and we are confident this project will prove a major success in harnessing that," said Sharifa.

Any women who wish to take part in the scheme should contact Sharifa Patel at the Wolfenden Community Centre on (01204) 535674.
