SIR: In your edition of August 19, 1996, two correspondents interested me with their comments. They were:
The Denhams of Blackrod who commented on the DSS snooper system. Without condoning or condemning this system I would like the Denhams to enlighten one as to whether or not they would treat a pickpocket or bag snatcher with the sympathy they seek for the benefits cheat. It is all one law-breaking practice. The letter from Mrs Adams regarding repairs to property referred to by A E Ivers of Farnworth. I did not see the original letter but can guess it would be for the benefit of the Maxton Home. The point of the reply which interested me is how the local authority is praised for always keeping the people well informed at election time.
True, they realise there is an electorate outside the Labour Clubs when they hope to win votes - the problem is they forget as soon as the votes are counted and the next communication from the Bolton Authority is the council charge. The Conservative Government have to keep a tight rein on such authorities. Dorothy B Waters, Winifred Road, Farnworth
