BOLTON-born soap star Paul Nicholls has clinched a new contract on top soap Eastenders.

Paul, aged 17, from Smithills, originally joined the top show on a six-month contract but now will be in the soap until at least next February.

And according to industry reports today, Eastenders bosses have awarded him a £65,000-a-year contract.

The reported deal would make Paul, who plays the part of Bolton-born Joe Wicks in Eastenders, one of the highest paid teenage actors in British soap.

There is also growing speculation that Paul could be named best soap newcomer at the National TV Awards in October against stiff competition including Tracy Shaw who plays Maxine in Eastenders.

Paul's love of acting began at Church Road primary school and was developed at Smithills high school.

His mum Julie confirmed today: "It is true that he is staying on until at least next February. I don't want to discuss money but I would stress that the figure quoted today is over the mark."
