BOLTON has asked the Government for £6.42 million to spend on the town's transport system next year. It was forced to downgrade its plans after the Government demanded more realistic bids for cash.

Last year Bolton put in a bid for transport cash amounting to £9,768,000 but received only £2.34 million. Most of the money will be spent on road repairs and maintaining the borough's bridges.

Highways chiefs have managed to get a bigger slice of a separate cash allocation to Greater Manchester.

Last year Bolton was angry when it received only 6.9 per cent of the total transport grant for the 10 authorities in Greater Manchester. Now it has negotiated an increase to eight per cent which could mean an extra £100,000 for Bolton.
