A BOLTON grandmother breathed a sigh of relief after hearing her Olympic gymnast grandson was safe and well following the Atlanta bombing.

Catherine Brindle, 82, spent an anxious few hours on Saturday fearing that her grandson Dominic, 20, may have been caught up in the Centennial Park bombing.

Mrs Brindle, of Southend Street, in Daubhill, said: "I was very worried when I saw the placards around Bolton on Saturday saying there had been a bomb.

"Dominic is over in Atlanta with his mum, Joan and sister Lisa. I was worried about all of them."

To her relief she received a phone call from her daughter-in-law on Saturday night just to put her mind at rest.

She added: "Fortunately everyone was alright. They weren't in the park at the time of the bomb.

"And they say they are not going to let this ruin their time in Atlanta. They are being extra careful but are still determined to enjoy themselves."

Dominic, from Bradford, who was a member of the British gymnastic team, competed in the first week of the competition.

Mrs Brindle said that although her grandson will be coming home without any medals he has still had a "marvellous time".
