LOUIS Armstrong lay in state in a military armoury in Manhattan today to allow his countless friends and fans to pay their last homage. 'Satchmo' Armstrong, who died on Tuesday, two days after his 71st birthday, will be buried in New York.

YESTERDAY was the hottest day of the year, and absence of rainfall in the early part of the year means that we have now only 85 days' supply of water as compared with 138 days at the same time last year. Whilst there is no real cause for anxiety, it should be borne in mine that not since 1940 have our supplies been so depleted, and it is essential to conserve existing supplies.

YESTERDAY afternoon, as a man named Shaw was driving a cow to Manchester through Little Hulton, the animal espying a house door open ran into the place, and was not ejected before it had done considerable damage to the crockery and furniture in the house. As may be anticipated the occupier of the house was greatly alarmed by the vagaries of the unexpected visitor, and was not a little delighted to have the 'tail turned upon him'.
