UNITED Utilities have been rapped by MPs for insisting on introducing pre-payment meters for water into homes of the poor.

Six MPs, led by Rossendale and Darwen's Janet Anderson, have condemned the firm for cutting dozens of people off from water when they made pre-tax profits last year of £272.6 million.

The MPs are demanding United Utilities cancel their programme of installing the meters.

The Commons Motion notes that the firm - which includes North West Water - has begun including the pre-payment meters into home which for the most part has low income families who have fallen into arrears with their bills.

Bolton Council has joined eight other councils in condemning the move.
