A SPATE of break-ins is forcing three Bolton Scout leaders to hit the heights this weekend. The Bury New Road premises of the 15th Bolton East Scout Group has been broken into six times in the past few months. The thieves have stolen tents and stoves, leaving the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts aged from six to 16 short on equipment for camp.

So, assistant Beaver leader Carol Barnett, helper Tony Brooks and Scout leader Tim Walmsley will be tackling the famous Three Peaks Walk this Saturday and Sunday to raise sponsorship cash.

The walk involves climbing the highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales, all within 24 hours. And that means tackling 4,406 feet Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike at 3,200 feet and Snowdon at 3,500 feet.

To do this, the trio and their four-strong support team will set off at the bottom of Ben Nevis. Once the three have been to the summit and back they will be driven through the night to the Lake District to arrive early morning.

They will then go up Scafell Pike in the dark and early morning light before it's on to Snowdon where they will have to reach the summit to complete the walk.

Sponsorship has come from private individuals and local firms including Jacksons Van Hire from Darcy Lever who have loaned a van for the trip. Breightmet Conservative Club and Breightmet Labour Club have also given support and anyone who would like to help can contact Tim Walmsley on 0161-763-3035.

He is confident that they can complete the walk, and added that it was important they did "because we do need the equipment."
